Ovello is the largest subzone in the municipality of Barbaresco, divided in two large slopes, one facing east and the other south-west. The soil is composed of bluish-gray Sant'Agata Fossiile marl. We own 0.25 hectares on the south-western slope, which enjoys similar exposure to Cavanna but it has a different microclimate as it is further away from the Tanaro River. Our first bottling dates is since 2022 vintage.
Ovello
Barbaresco DOCG
Origin
In the village of Barbaresco, the Ovello Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva, or MGA (indicating a registered vineyard),
Vinification
Maceration for 25-30 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with regular pumpover. Malolactic fermentation continues in stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine ages at least 18-24 months in large, 15HL, Slavonian-oak barrels averaging 15 years old.
Bottling
To avoid complications caused by oxidation at colder temperatures, as temperatures increase with the advent of summer, the wine is typically bottled in July following three years of barrel aging.
The bottles will then be stored horizontally at 16-18 C°.
Storage
This wine is suited to long aging. It is recommended to store the bottles at regulated temperature and humidity (16-18 C° and 60%) away from bright light.
Harvest
The harvest in Ovello takes place between Asili and Montestefano, where old vines, thick skins and south-western exposure are the key in achieving excellent phenolic concentration. Between the first and second week of October.
