The vineyard is
our home

We are convinced that safeguarding the environment also means taking responsibility for ourselves and our duty to care for this precious terrain. We believe that man must use a gentle and perceptive hand and never overshadow the qualities of our fruit but rather enhancing the diversity among them. Diversity means beauty.

Barbaresco: An appellation born 13 million years ago

These hills that we admire today were once at the bottom of the inland sea called the Ligurian-Piedmontese Tertiary Basin. This part of the sea started to retreat during the Tortonian era of the late Miocene period, 13 million years ago. Sedimentary deposits formed various layers that today compose our soils, marls known as le Marne di Sant’Agata Fossili.

Cavanna

Cavanna is the subzone closest to the center of the village of Barbaresco. The exposure is west to southwest and the soils are composed of laminated Sant’Agata Fossili marls mixed with silt. Our vineyard, divided into three parcels, ends at the sheer dropoff of the cliffs along the Tanaro River, whose currents contribute to a unique microclimate.

The vineyard is the one we hold most dear: it was the first to be vinified as a single-vineyard by Luigi in 1971 and, ever since, we have been the only producer to produce a Barbareco bearing the vineyard designation.

Asili

Asili may be the most reputable and sought-after vineyard of Barbaresco. It is a vineyard that gives us some of the best wines in the appellation. The reasons for its worldwide fame are linked to its unique geological composition within the town of Barbaresco: Light-gray Sant’Agata Fossili marls mix with sandy deposits to generate wines of the utmost fineness and elegance.

We hold a small, half-hectare parcel with southeast exposure that enjoys a cooler micro-climate in the heat of late afternoon. Our first bottling dates back to 1973.

Montestefano

Montestefano is the most historic vineyard in the appellation, vinified as a single vineyard as early as 1961. It is one of the best zones for Nebbiolo da Barbaresco, with the perfect soils and conditions to give rise to powerful, structured wines. The Sant’Agata marls here are a bluish-gray, dense and deep, with active limestone.

Our parcel enjoys direct southern exposure, situated at the highest part of the hill, and allows us to focus on making an ageworthy wine. In the best years, we select grapes from the oldest vines to produce a Riserva. Our first bottling dates back to 1971.

The cellar, where the fruits of a year’s worth of hard work take shape and build flavor.

The cellar is certainly the core, where the changing of the seasons accompanied by our labor give rise together to the final product found in the glass. Vinification follows a classic method, alternating vessels of steel, concrete, and wood depending on the wine, in order to transmit the clear differences between the different vineyards thanks to their respective microclimates.
